WHAT IS STORMWATER AND HOW CAN I HELP?
Efforts to reduce stormwater pollution in Green Level are starting as a result of federal mandates connected to the Clean Water Act. Polluted runoff occurs when rain, snowmelt or some other water source picks up pollutants like sediment, oil, pet waste, litter, soaps and fertilizers and carries them to the nearest creek, stream, or river. Stormwater does not receive any treatment before it enters the nearest body of water.

The Town of Green Level received its stormwater permit on October 1, 2005. The permit, under the Federal Clean Water Act, requires the Town to start a six-point stormwater management program. This program calls for:

o Public Education and Outreach

o Public Participation and Involvement

o Illicit Discharge Detection

o Construction Site Runoff Control

o Post Construction Runoff Control

o Pollution Prevention and Municipal Housekeeping

Over the next five years the town will be working to educate its citizens in ways we can reduce stormwater pollution, creating a map of the Town's stormwater system and checking for leaks and illicit hookups, inspecting all the Town's facilities to ensure any stormwater impacts are eliminated or minimized, and requiring best management practices, or BMPs, be installed in some future developments to reduce the pollutants picked up by runoff.

Public service announcements and a Web site (www.greenlevelnc.com) are being prepared to inform you about the Town's efforts to reduce stormwater pollution. The Town has also formed a partnership with other communities to inform the public about stormwater pollution. To learn more about stormwater and ways you can help, please take time to visit www.StormwaterSMART.org. Please call Quentin McPhatter, Town Administrator if you have any questions.

CITIZENS NEEDED FOR STORMWATER GROUP

GREEN LEVEL ETJ INFORMATION AND ZONING MAP
Adoption of the ETJ ordinance means that Green Level zoning classifications and subdivision regulations apply in the area. Building inspections would continue to be provided by Alamance County.

Being within Green Level's ETJ is different from being within its corporate limits. Property owners within the ETJ do not pay Town property taxes and do not vote in municipal elections. All residents of the area are eligible to apply to the Alamance County Board of Commissioners to serve as a representative on the Town's Planning Board and the Board of Adjustment. These boards help guide the Town in determining policy and long term decision-making.

Being within the ETJ does mean that all new development and construction must conform and comply with the Town's land use codes. This includes zoning, subdivision approval, and site plan review. A map of the ETJ area and any other relevant information pertaining to these matters is available at the Green Level Town Hall at 2510 Green Level Church Road.

Please contact Haywood Cloud by e-mail at hcloud@greenlevelnc.com or by telephone at (336) 578-3443 if you have any zoning questions.
A copy of the Town's Zoning Map can be e-mailed upon request.
